Summer Food for Kids: How Families Can Stay Fed

When school lets out for the summer, the free meals kids get during the school year stop too. That can be hard on a lot of families in Central Florida. Here are some simple ways to keep your kids fed all summer long.

Why Summer Can Be Tricky

During the school year, many kids get breakfast and lunch at school. When summer comes, those meals go away. But the bills do not. Food, rent, and the power bill to keep your home cool all still need to be paid.

If your grocery budget feels tight in June, July, and August, you are not alone. Many Orlando families feel the same stretch. The good news is that help is out there, and asking for it is a smart thing to do.

Plan Simple, Filling Meals

You do not need to be a chef to feed your kids well. A few easy habits can make summer meals go further.

  • Buy in bulk when you can. Rice, beans, pasta, and oats fill little tummies and cost less per meal.
  • Stretch your proteins. Add beans or eggs to a meal to make meat last longer.
  • Keep easy snacks ready. Cut fruit, peanut butter, and crackers are cheap and quick. Kids get hungry often in summer.
  • Drink water. It keeps kids cool and saves money on sugary drinks.

Try cooking a big pot of something on cooler mornings. Soup, chili, or a rice dish can feed your family for a couple of days. Leftovers mean less work and less waste.

Free Summer Meals for Kids

Many places in Central Florida offer free summer meals for kids and teens. Some libraries, parks, schools, and churches serve breakfast or lunch during the break. Most are open to any child, with no sign-up needed.

To find a site near you, you can:

  • Call 2-1-1 for local food help in the Orlando area.
  • Ask at your local library or community center.
  • Check with your child's school. They often share summer meal sites before the break.

These meals are made for kids, so do not be shy about using them. They are there to help, and your child deserves a full belly during summer.
