Staying Cool and Healthy in the Florida Summer

Summer in Central Florida is hot, sticky, and long. Staying healthy when the heat rises takes a little planning, but the good news is that simple steps can keep you and your family feeling your best.

Drink Water Before You Feel Thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already low on water. So try to sip water all day long, not just when your throat feels dry.

Keep a water bottle with you. Take small drinks often. If you work outside, in a yard, or in a hot kitchen, drink even more.

Here are a few easy ways to get more water:

  • Start your morning with a glass of water.
  • Add slices of lemon, lime, or cucumber for flavor.
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers.

Watch out for sugary sodas and energy drinks. They can leave you feeling more tired and thirsty. Plain water is still the best choice on a hot Orlando day.

Know the Warning Signs of Heat

Florida heat can sneak up on you. Your body gives you signals when it gets too hot, so it helps to know them.

Watch for these early signs of heat sickness:

  • Headache or feeling dizzy
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling weak or very tired

If you notice these signs, stop what you are doing. Get into the shade or a cool room. Sip water slowly and rest.

More serious signs are a warning to act fast. If someone stops sweating, gets confused, or faints, that may be heat stroke. Call 911 right away. Heat stroke is a real emergency.

Stay Cool During the Hottest Hours

In Orlando, the sun is strongest in the middle of the day. If you can, plan errands and outdoor work for the early morning or evening.

When you must be outside, dress smart:

  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing.
  • Put on a hat and sunglasses.
  • Use sunscreen on your skin.

Take breaks in the shade or in air conditioning. If your home gets too warm, try a public library, a store, or a community center to cool off. A short break in a cool place can make a big difference.

Don't forget the people and pets who need extra care. Check on older neighbors and family members. Never leave a child or a pet in a parked car, not even for a minute. Cars heat up fast and can become deadly very quickly.

Care for Your Whole Body

Hydration is just one part of staying healthy in summer. Good food, rest, and movement matter too.

Try to eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables. Get enough sleep so your body can recover from the heat. And if you exercise, do it in the cooler parts of the day and keep your water close.

If money is tight, you are not alone. Healthy food should not be a worry. We are here to help you and your family get the nourishing food you need, so you can feel strong all summer long.

Taking care of yourself does not have to be hard. Small choices each day add up to better health.
